On Friday afternoon we ran around, loaded the car up, grabbed a few bottles of wine, and kissed the pups goodbye, we were off! It was such a welcomed retreat with Drew and a time to just be together, celebrate, throwback a drink (or three) and get back to “us.” Sounds weird, right? It’s just true. These last few months have been straight overdrive, from moving into our new house, to vacations, to tons of visitors, the miscarriage, and crazy work launches, we’ve savored and felt all the feels throughout these months but this little redez vous to Chicago came at the perfect time (which also happened to be my birthday.) We had thought about staying home and tackling some house projects, but when it came down to it, we just needed to get away for a few days and chill out. Drew teamed up with one of my best friends, Bethany, and together they schemed up a plan – one that I loved!
We stayed at Hotel Allegro downtown and slept in (until 10AM – what?! I think we needed some good sleep away from the puppies!) We ate our way through the city starting with dinner and a double date with Bee + Mikey at Gyu-Kake Japanese Barbecue! Each table and booth has it’s own grill and you get to cook your own food, it was AMAZING and such a fun experience, we loved it. Bethany slaved away and made me a turtle cheesecake and I couldn’t stop eating it! Saturday we met for brunch at Bar Siena where I pummeled down a lobster benedict (and Drew drank a delicious Bloody Mary!) then we got pedicures, chilled out, and went for an early dinner at Momotaro. I can’t even remember half the things we ate but each dish was beautiful and so well prepared, plus, sushi. Yes. We met up with Bee and Mikey for a few drinks and then slept a solid 10 hours at the hotel before hitting the road and heading home. It was just an awesome weekend to just get away from reality, enjoy the city, eat donuts, drink good coffee and sleep in.
One of the biggest things I’ve realized lately is that we are so blessed to have each other. Not only do we love each other, we just “like” each other. Whether we are driving in the car or out at a fancy dinner (that we have no idea what we’re eating) we have fun, we laugh a heck of a lot (so much so, I lost my voice) and we just like to be together. It felt good to just get back to “us” after everything and have fun, get away from work, and do something new. Our little weekend away was the perfect way to bring in year 28 and I am so thankful to have such a darling husband and such great friends to celebrate life with! For real, 28 is already looking good (sounding good? Not so much, I left my voice in Chicago!)
Thank you Drew, Bee, and Mikey for the special weekend! Just what the birthday girl needed.
