Should you work with someone you love?!

I’ve always been fascinated by the couples who defy the odds, seamlessly blending their personal and professional lives and thriving along the way… like Matthew and Audrey Hussey!

Over the past fifteen years, Matthew Hussey’s proven approach has inspired millions through authentic, insightful, and practical advice that not only enables them to find love but also feel confident and in control of their own happiness.

His wife, Audrey, serves as the Creative Directory for his brand – working alongside him and the rest of their team to spearhead marketing initiatives, create content, and propel the brand forward.

In this episode, I speak to them about the daily grind of running a business together, how they separate their personal and professional lives, their biggest advice for other couples considering working together, how to have hard conversations both in love and in business, and more.

If you’ve ever considered working with your partner, this episode is for you, so click play now! And don’t forget to grab Matthew’s brand new book, Love Life: How to Raise Your Standards, Find Your Person, and Live Happily (No Matter What), which is out April 23, 2024!

The Misconceptions of Working Together

One of the first things people assume when they hear about couples working together is that it must be either a disaster or a dream come true. However, according to the Husseys, the reality is far more nuanced than that!

While Matthew and Audrey shared a positive experience, they also highlighted the importance of personality compatibility and setting boundaries to maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life.

The Importance of Communication

Matthew and Audrey emphasized the significance of open communication in their working relationship. They discussed the need to establish rules around discussing work matters to prevent it from consuming their personal time.

They also highlighted the importance of acknowledging the toll that work commitments can take on their relationship and actively working towards creating a more stable and balanced environment.

Documenting the Journey

One aspect that stood out to me was the idea of documenting the journey Matthew has taken to get to where he is. Matthew’s candid approach to writing his book, Love Life, from various stages of his own relationship experiences, including heartbreak and self-discovery, resonated with me.

This serves as a reminder of the importance of embracing vulnerability and authenticity in sharing one’s story.

Self-Awareness and Growth

If you’re thinking of working with your partner, it is absolutely necessary to improve your self-awareness and personal growth. Matthew highlighted the need for people to understand their unique strengths and weaknesses and how these factors influence the dynamics of working together as a couple.

It’s essential to recognize that each relationship has its own DNA and requires a tailored approach to succeed. For example, the DNA of mine and Drew’s relationship is that we absolutely could NOT work together… But give us a parenting challenge, and we’re the perfect match!

Managing Expectations

We ended our discussion on the importance of managing expectations when considering working with a partner. While the initial excitement of embarking on a joint venture may be enticing, Matthew and Audrey believe it’s crucial to start with low-stakes experiments to test the compatibility and dynamics of working together.

This approach allows for a gradual transition into a more significant commitment, ensuring that both partners are aligned and prepared for the challenges ahead.
