Dear Kate,
It’s crazy to think that you are 21. It’s mind boggling, actually. I remember the day when I was in kindergarten and my teacher told me I had to call mom in the hospital. You had just been born and when I heard that I had a little sister I started screaming (total natural reaction, now that I think about it.) I was terrified/surprised/excited, mostly excited and I wanted to take “my baby” home. I always give mom heck for letting my six year old self carry you around, feed you, change you, and take you shopping (like any good sister would) but she told me that she wouldn’t have let it happen if she didn’t trust me and I like to think that we were already glued to the hip.
I can’t believe that we can now (legally) share a bottle of wine together, that you’re last big milestone birthday has struck (it’s all silly years from here) and that we get to celebrate together. I want to be like you when I grow up. I know we joke a lot but I admire the heck out of you. You are beautiful, strong, talented, brilliant, hilarious, and you do you… so well. You never conform, you don’t apologize, and you rock out whatever it is you feel like doing. I am so crazy proud of you, I am grateful for the years we shared a room and bunk beds, I am more grateful that we can now share clothes and shoes, and I am so happy that I got to take a little road trip to remind you that you are loved, you are gorgeous, and this trip around the sun is going to be a great one!
