Happy 4th of July, loves! This holiday always makes me remember weekends spent at the family cabin with my sweet Great Grandma Bertha and her adorable sun hats! We would fish for sunfish and do the macarena on the dock. We played raft tag and would swim across the lake and sometimes I would make my dad take me fishing in the rowboat. We would go on walks down the sand roads and if I was lucky, my dad would let me drive the car on the old back roads. We would play croquet and swing into the pine trees on the swing set facing the lake. We skun our knees on the trip down to the lake and build sand castles. We would have fireworks contests across the lake and cheer as the spark
s flew high in the sky. Everyone gathered around for burgers and brats and American flag themed cheesecake. We all had full bellies and full hearts and those are some of my fondest summer memories as a kid. The cabin was our oasis and we always yearned to spend time there.
Now everyone has grown, family has moved, and people are starting their own families but this year I am so excited to report that the tradition will carry on (only in a new way.) A few years ago my parents bought a new family cabin and started new traditions with our family! This year we get to be active participants since I took a weekend off and it will be the longest time Drew and I will off together all summer. I am so excited for this long trip to the northwoods and can’t wait to pontoon, nap, and read to my hearts content. (Oh, and sip some beer too!) This trip is coming at a great time, the middle of my season and the heart of the craziness. Something about up north is calming to my soul and I can’t wait to share some time with my dear family, my hunky husband, and my sweet little pups (who will be swimming in the lake!)
Happy Independence Day, loves. I pray that wherever you are, you get to take a deep breath and enjoy yourself for even a few moments in time.
