Today I am so excited to be speaking with Stephanie from Aerie. Aerie is one of my all-time favorite companies and one of the things that I love so much about them is that they don’t re-touch any of their models! In this episode we get to talk about pushing the boundaries in media, how to go against the flow and what the day-to-day looks like as one of the social media managers for Aerie.
SHOW NOTES
Stephanie has always believed in body positivity and woman empowerment (3:31).
“To be able to work with a company that believes that inside and out it really makes me so excited everyday when I come to work” (3:44)
One thing Aerie does as a team every morning is to listen to the community feedback and user-generated content (3:53).
“We are always listening, and I think listening is key” (6:40)
In 2014, Aerie launched the #AerieReal Initiative to stop retouching all of their girls, which is what jumpstarted their massive online following (7:45).
“Our girls are beautiful just the way they are, and we want our girls to know that we believe that as well.” (8:12)
Stephanie notes that Aerie was one of the first retailers to not retouch any of their models (16:51).
She shares about Aerie’s partnership with NEDA, and how they are the first ever retail brand partnering with this organizing to spread a positive message about body image (18:02).
“We help stand for young woman believing in themselves and helping them through any eating disorders” (18:15)
In terms of who Aerie partners with, as far as casting models it really depends on what the person stands for, and who she is on the inside (26:40).
“It has really turned into a conversation of who is the person, not what does that person look like” (26:46)
