You don’t need a plan; you just need to be present.
If you know me, you know that I am the perfectly imperfect mix of a go-with-the-flow gal mixed with some wicked type A tendencies! In life I am pretty relaxed, in business it’s a whole other story. I kicked off wedding season this past weekend and have 26 weddings coming up in the next 24 weekends! This is my third full-time wedding season since leaving the my office job to pursue what felt like the wildest dream of all time. Going into this season I wanted a game plan, I wanted everything lined up and tied up with bows before it started. I spent days scheduling emails, programming reminders, creating invoices and making checklists. I wanted to try and keep my life as normal as possible while in the midst of one beautiful (wedding) storm of weddings.

I was reminded to throw all of that out the window when I was reading notes from Bob Goff’s book, Love Does. He reminds us that we don’t always need a plan, we just need to be present. Just hearing those words reminded me to really focus on what the task at hand is. It isn’t to have perfect files and a picture perfect office, it is to capture memories on the best day ever for my clients. It’s easy as a business owner to get caught up in the emails, blog posts, invoices, and spreadsheets – we can get consumed and begin to forget about what led us to set out on this endeavor in the first place. Sure, having all of my ducks in a row allows me to disconnect more often but my greatest job is being present and preserving the fleeting moments of a wedding day.
As I embark on another crazy busy season that will last until November, I am going to use this as my mantra. Yes, I will have everything planned and in place but wedding days are living, breathing phenomenons and I just need to be present for me to create the best art and allow my clients to be free to do the same. I want to take it all in, see every moment so that I can produce the kind of images that make my heart beat fast! My world is about to blow up with beautiful images and amazing couples, so stay tuned. This blog will be a little different in the midst of it all and I can’t wait to fill it with the love stories that I am honored to tell! Let the fun begin!
“There is only one invitation it would kill me to refuse, yet I’m tempted to turn it down all the time. I get the invitation every morning when I wake up to actually live a life of complete engagement, a life of whimsy, a life where love does”
-Bob Goff
