I used to always tease that I was “hungover” on Sundays, even though the only I drinks I consume at weddings are kiddie cocktails or coffee. You see, the day after a wedding is meant to be spent on the couch with as little movement as possible. (Most Sunday’s I pretend that the floor is lava and I’ll die if I get off of the couch.) Your body aches, your brain is still spinning, your feet are swollen from running, and all the wrinkle cream in the world couldn’t erase those smile lines. After I finished up on Saturday night, Drew met me at the wedding were we danced until the band stopped, enjoyed a glass of wine, and celebrated all of the amazing couples in my life this past year! Our sweet couple put us up in downtown Milwaukee and it was such a treat to celebrate a Saturday night with my love! Sundays are sacred to many photographers and are a day that we attempt to take off in order to feel like we have some sort of normal life balance. So what does 30 wedding hangovers feel like? It feels surreal. Part of me wants to get up and do a little dance while the other part of me wants to sink into my bed and hibernate for a month. It’s this joyful, tired feeling that can’t really be summed up but lordy, it’s taken over.
With each and every year in this industry I plant my feet a little firmer and I figure things out a bit more. While I promised to cut back this year, I actually took way more on. In an attempt to create consistency, I streamlined my workflow and that efficiency led to more jobs, more clients, more weddings, and more photos. It wasn’t good nor bad, it was simply busy… and busy isn’t bad unless it’s all consuming. After every season I need a few weeks to clear my mind, catch up on Grey’s Anatomy, live in yoga pants, become a hermit, and reevaluate where I am headed and what I hope to accomplish in the upcoming year. Consider it a detox after the hangover: a cleansing that gives clarity, rest, and relaxation. It helps me to take a step back and really look at my business with fresh eyes and a discerning heart! I am so thankful to be able to have some down time to refresh and revisit my main mission in this business! What about you? Do you give yourself a quiet time? Do you allow yourself to take a step back and really evaluate where you are at and where you are headed? Do you quiet your mind enough to listen to your dreams? We are always on the go, always chasing, always on to the next. I seriously encourage you to take a step back, shut down, open your mind and dream. Thank you to the 30 amazing couples who chose and trusted me this wedding season, I am seriously the luckiest to have spent my weekends watching your precious moments unfold!
