Quick heads up, this post is created in partnership with Pinterest as a part of the Pinterest Educator Program, which is super cool!
Eight years ago, I was cozied up in a coffee shop, warm latte in hand, laptop open, and my very first virtual assistant across the table. I remember that day so clearly because it marked a big shift: the beginning of loosening my white-knuckle grip on everything in my business.
At one point, she looked at me and asked, “So… what’s Pinterest doing for you right now?”
I perked up and replied proudly, “Oh! I’ve got that cute little ‘Pin It’ button on my blog. So it’s working for me, right?”
We both smiled. But the reality? That button was my entire Pinterest strategy.
It was like printing business cards and leaving them on park benches. Technically, I was doing something. But it wasn’t strategic. It wasn’t intentional. And it definitely wasn’t delivering traffic in a way that moved the needle.
That little button was doing some heavy lifting, but solo.
But you know what? It was a start.
What the “Pin It” (Save) Button Actually Does
Let’s start with the basics: the “Pin It” button (now called the Save button by Pinterest) appears on your blog images, either when someone hovers over them or all the time, depending on your settings. When clicked, it lets a reader instantly save that image (and the linked content) to their Pinterest board.
So simple, but so powerful.
Adding this button makes your content easier to share. It gives your readers a quick and intuitive way to save your blog posts, freebies, product images, and more. And it helps Pinterest users discover your content, without you having to do anything extra.
That’s the beauty of Pinterest, it keeps working behind the scenes long after you hit “publish.”
Why This Still Matters in 2025
If you’re creating content of any kind, like blog posts, tutorials, podcast episodes, or landing pages, you want that content to keep working for you. Not just for a day or two, but for weeks, months, even years. Let me tell you, that isn’t possible if you’re on the churn and burn cycle of social media.
That’s why Pinterest is my favorite platform! Pinterest is a visual search engine, not a social media platform. Unlike your Instagram Stories that vanish in 24 hours or your Facebook posts that disappear into the scroll, Pinterest pins live on, sometimes for months or even years.
And the best part is, unlike social media where people go to be distracted, people are on Pinterest with intent. In fact, 85% of weekly Pinterest users have made a purchase based on pins they saw from brands. Source: GfK for Pinterest, Path to purchase study with weekly Pinners, US, Nov 2018)
Here’s why the Save button still matters:
- Makes your content instantly shareable
- Extends the lifespan of your blog posts
- Helps you reach new, searching audiences
- Works behind the scenes 24/7

It’s a small tweak with a big return. No extra content, no new tech. Just a button and a big opportunity to get your work seen and found.

How to Add the “Save” Button to Your Blog

If you use WordPress:
- Go to your WordPress dashboard
- Click on Plugins > Add New
- Search for: “Pinterest Pin It Button on Image Hover and Post”. Note: this is specifically my personal recommendation, but there are other options so you can choose what fits best for you.
- Install and activate the plugin
- Go to Settings > Pinterest Button and customize:
- Choose hover or always-on display
- Pick which post types it shows on (posts, pages, etc.)
- Select your button style (small, large, red, gray)
Boom! How easy was that? If I could do this years ago, I promise you can do this, too! Complete these steps and your images now display the Save button to Pinterest users with zero added effort from you.
If you use Showit, Squarespace, or a Tonic Template:
- Go to Pinterest’s Save Button Guide here to grab the code you need.
- I know this page MIGHT look a little overwhelming if you’re brand new to code, but don’t fret. Follow the page and it will start making sense!
- Copy the code Pinterest gives you
- Paste that code into your website’s custom code or header/footer area
Not sure where your header lives? Your platform’s support docs or a quick search on Google (i.e. “[Your Platform] insert header code”) will help you find it. You can also ask your web designer if you work with one.
What Happens After You Install It
Here’s where it gets interesting.
Once that button is live, you can actually start learning from it.
Pinterest’s recommendation is to use the filter for “Source” in your Analytics and look at “Other Pins”. This will filter to Pins created by anyone else that link back to your claimed site and accounts. Voila!
Now you’ve got insight. You’re not guessing. You can:
- Double down on content that’s already being saved
- Create new pins for your most popular posts
- Add stronger opt-ins or CTAs to older posts that are gaining traction
- Pin things you haven’t even touched yet, like product or portfolio pages
The Save button becomes a breadcrumb trail. Your audience is showing you what they love. All you have to do is follow it, and in my experience, it will lead you to real, lasting results.

It’s the Starting Line, Not the Whole Strategy
I’ve taught over 25,000 entrepreneurs how to use Pinterest to drive consistent traffic and grow their businesses, and here’s what I’ll always say:
This button is where the journey starts. Not where it ends. While overall, a Pinterest strategy is an easy one, it does need you to step up and learn the strategy first.
The Save button invites your readers to take action, making it super easy for them to do so. But if you really want to grow your audience, boost your traffic, and build your list with customers who want to buy your offers? You’ll need to go deeper.
And that’s where strategy comes in: pin design, keyword research, smart descriptions, and consistency.
Once I started applying those steps, I didn’t just see a little boost in traffic, I saw a 20x increase. That’s the power of Pinterest when you pair visibility with strategy. So if you’ve been wondering how to breathe new life into your blog content, this is your sign to install the Save button. Then, when you’re ready to turn Pinterest into a traffic machine? I’ll show you how.
Ready for What’s Next?
While this is a brilliant first step, it is just that, the first step. If you’re ready to take your Pinterest strategy to the next level and you’re nodding your head and thinking, “Okay, I’m in… but what do I do after the button?” I’ve got you.
Watch my free Pinterest training! I walk you through my strategy step-by-step and show you how to drive traffic to your content and your work in just an hour a week.
You’ll learn the same system I use to keep content alive for months and reach dream clients every single day. Your content can work harder for you, and you can help it without losing time, energy, or even money.
