My winter capsule wardrobe:
It’s baaaaaack, it’s time to refresh my winter capsule wardrobe. So maybe you’re wondering: well, what exactly is a capsule wardrobe? It’s emptying out your overstuffed closet of things you kind-of, sorta like and pairing it way down to about 30 intentional pieces that you can mix, match, and wear for an entire season. That’s right, I said 30 pieces TOTAL.
Close your eyes and imagine with me having your closet with just 30 items, neatly organized so you could actually see them and put together outfits in minutes (without trying on a million things you don’t even like.) It’s pieces that actually fit, that you can’t wait to wear, and that are intentionally chosen to fit inside of a wardrobe that can be worn in many ways!
The process of creating a capsule:
I did one in the past and slowly started accumulating things. It happened slow but all of a sudden I was bursting at the seams. I had two clothes baskets in the laundry room of CLEAN clothes that I couldn’t even put away because I had no more space. After dropping off SIX bags of clothes to the Salvation Army, I was ready to clean my act up and get back to a more minimal lifestyle. It was when I looked into the closet and thought: I have nothing to wear, that I knew I needed to make a change.
If you’re curious on how you actually create a capsule, let me break it on down for you! Basically you have to empty EVERYTHING out of your closet and dresser – yes, every single piece, no, don’t skip this step. Then you need to go one by one through your clothes and try things on. What helped was grabbing two storage totes for things that are seasonal or special occasion and putting them into the basement storage (note: I ended up donating 90% of it after last year because I realized I didn’t miss it!)
Shop Responsibly:
Let me be the first to admit that I never really understood what “ethical” fashion was. I am absolutely still a work in progress in finding the perfect pair of black pants from an ethical shop but 90% of my pieces this time around were chosen intentionally from companies who are changing the fashion game. One of the benefits of creating a capsule is that it cuts down on shopping time (you aren’t shopping every month for something specific) and you actually save money because after you’ve created the capsule, you’re done looking and shopping and you’re more settled on the simplified approach to clothing.
The two main places I shopped for this capsule were: Vetta Capsule and ABLE, both are companies that are responsibly creating clothes and are choosing staple pieces that can fit into your wardrobe easily! My biggest goal was to be as conscious of a shopper as I could be while choosing pieces that I absolutely adore and feel great in!
Shop the looks:
Black Pants // White Collared Convertible Shirt Dress // Black Cardigan // Chambray Dress // Grey Oversized Sweater // Cream Belle Sleeve Shirt // Jean Jacket // Tassel Necklace // Gold Necklace // Floral Robe // Boots // Flats
Ok you are the cutest!! I’m kinda tempted to just copy your entire capsule wardrobe haha. Thanks so much for sharing ethical brands! I’m always on the lookout for more!
Hi Jenna (great name! 😉 )
This is such a great idea!
Less choice = no analysis paralysis or decision fatigue. That free app up SO much time for other things.
And to shop ethically is even better
This is the perfect site for anyone who wants to understand this
topic. You know so much its almost tough to argue with you (not
that I actually will need to…HaHa). You certainly put a brand new
spin on a topic that has been discussed for years.
Wonderful stuff, just wonderful!
