“i reckon i must be just an old softy because i still believe in love…
i think the best is yet to come because where i’m from, is also where i’m going”
in lieu of celebrating my first free weekend in months, drew + i decided that we needed to celebrate our one year anniversary. however, when it came down to figuring out just what to do on this fabulous weekend, we couldn’t make up our minds. so friday morning we packed our bags to road trip up to the north woods paradise of my parent’s cabin. we surprised them after slyly declining many invitations and spent the weekend perusing islands, watching sunsets, kayaking, jet skiing, running, sleeping… basically all of the finest things in life, rolled into one weekend of celebrating love.
maybe it’s the fact that i am now a married woman or i am growing more wise with time, but i look at my parents through different eyes. eyes that understand what husband and wife do, eyes that admire how great of parents they are, eyes that appreciate the friendships they have and the stories they tell. paired with their best friends, duane + diane, we all relaxed and enjoyed the last days of summer. it only seemed right that we could have a mini photo session celebrating these couples milestone anniversaries, so we had an impromptu sunset five minute session that got me thinking…
after thirty-one years of married life, my parents have never had a photo shoot that didn’t include awkward posing and hideous backdrops. they never had a session that captured them, just as they were at each stage of life. they didn’t get to kiss or cuddle or laugh through photos, they put their cheeks together and said “smile” on the count of three. what a beautiful time in their lives to capture: a love that has raised three children, worked hard, played hard, and gone through life hand in hand. a couple who have survived ups and downs and live to laugh about it. we have so much fun snapping a few photos, giggling our way through, and letting their natural love show at their favorite place in the world, the cabin. why would we not have photo shoots for our parents who paved the road for us to celebrate our love? their love is experience, it is what we look up to…
our parents love deserves to be shared, celebrated.
so cheers to 31 years of bliss, we love you so much. oh, and dad, you made an excellent model!
