I Married Mr. Clean

Last night I pulled off a little surprise birthday party for Drew! Fifteen of our friends were waiting at one of his favorite restaurants with balloons, candy, and margaritas! We felt so blessed to be surrounded by such an amazing group of people and I was so thankful to surprise him! We all sat around laughing at how things fell into place for the two of us. Our love story was slow to start – actually, three years to begin to be precise. We were classmates first, friends second, lovers last (like wayyyy last.) Truth be told, we dated other people long before we ever considered dating each other. In fact, after being friends for three years we felt like we could never be anything more… we even had made a pact that we had to kiss just once to see what it would be like before Drew graduated college and moved on with his life. That’s how good of friends we were. The funniest part? I still have messages I had sent my girlfriends about him and how I thought he was “too wild” for me… um, what was I thinking? Hilarious now, because my friends call him Mark Stewart (although he didn’t really marry a Martha.)

You see, Drew is a neat freak. I should have known this going into things but I was naive and in love… (okay, I am still in love but just not as naive as my college days.) I mean, what college boy has his bed perfectly made, his laundry perfectly hung, and his closet sorted with an assortment of shoe boxes each labeled with it’s contents. I mean, when I go out with my girlfriends and they complain that their husband has never done a load of laundry or operated a vacuum, I laugh. I just have nothing to offer to the conversation because if I complained about the truth, they would probably throw their strawberry martini into my face and laugh. Sure it is the biggest blessing in disguise – I say disguise because there are some things that aren’t the best when you marry someone nicknamed Mr. Clean.

You see, this boy makes the bed when I am still in it. Like he literally tugs at the sheets at 5AM when I am fast asleep with my pups under each arm. He scrubs out my bathroom sink every night after I brush my teeth and does the dishes while I am cooking (“Um, hunny, I still need that wooden spoon.”) He vacuums so much that he wore out our Dyson – yes, the unbreakable vacuum and for Christmas he asks for cleaning supplies. He makes me look like a poor college freshman who lives off of paper plates and pizza and never does laundry. (Oooh, paper plates, I should use those more.) Drew insists on vacuuming twice a week and doesn’t appreciate my creative messes (you do know that creative people are rarely tidy, right babe?) I scramble around at 4PM and make the bed (that I likely just got out of) before he comes home from work and shove every last dish into the dish washer so it looks like the house is clean so he comes home to a stress free environment. But you see, even though it can sometimes be stressful being married to Mr. Clean, he is pretty dang awesome, my house is always clean, and I never have to worry about people “dropping in” for a visit. I suppose it isn’t the worst thing in the world… plus, my Mr. Clean isn’t bald and he’s allllll mine.
