Are you playing the long game in your business, or are you solely focused on short-term results? Can you see where you’ll be in 5 years, or are you stuck in a frenetic day-to-day routine, feeling overwhelmed and perpetually behind?
My guest today is Dorie Clark, who has been named three times as one of the Top 50 business thinkers in the world by Thinkers50, and was recognized as the #1 Communication Coach in the world by the Marshall Goldsmith Leading Global Coaches Awards.
In our conversation, Dorie and I discuss everything from why goal-setting is important, how we can make sure our vision stays both clear AND flexible, how we can start to practice seeing a long-term plan for ourselves and our businesses, and more.
This episode is truly jam packed with everything you need to know about how to approach goal-setting and achievement while staying grounded and present where you are, and I can’t wait for you to hear it!
Embracing Long-Term Thinking
Dorie emphasized the significance of lifting ourselves out of the daily grind to ask bigger questions about our long-term aspirations. She highlighted the risk of working tirelessly for years only to realize we’ve been chasing the wrong goals.
I loved when Dorie introduced a unique perspective on jealousy. She suggested that jealousy can actually be used as a positive motivator to explore what we truly desire by looking at the achievements of others!
Reinvention and Identity Shifts
Dorie shared her personal journey of reinvention, transitioning from academia to journalism, politics, and eventually running her own business. She emphasized the importance of adapting to unexpected changes and being open to new opportunities.
She also touched on the challenges of shifting identities, especially when starting something new where one may not excel immediately, emphasizing the importance of being okay with being a beginner.
Harnessing the Power of Long-Term Thinking
We delved into practical strategies for incorporating long-term thinking into our daily lives. Dorie suggested asking ourselves, “What can I do today to make tomorrow easier and better?”
This approach involves optimizing for interesting activities rather than solely focusing on money or meaning. By making small progress daily on meaningful projects, we can cultivate engagement and satisfaction in our work and lives.
Overcoming Busyness and Embracing Stillness
Dorie addressed the societal glorification of busyness as a status symbol and the tendency to fill our calendars to avoid confronting deeper questions. She encouraged creating space for introspection and targeted questioning to identify what truly brings happiness and fulfillment.
She then highlighted the benefits of activities like sauna sessions and distraction-free moments for fostering creativity and innovative thinking. I can definitely personally attest to this!
Balancing Heads Up and Heads Down Mode
A key takeaway from our conversation was the concept of balancing “heads up” and “heads down” modes in our lives. While heads down mode is essential for execution and productivity, periodically lifting our heads up allows us to assess changing circumstances and opportunities.
In our conversation, Dorie emphasized the importance of cycling between these modes to achieve long-term success holistically.
By incorporating these strategies into our daily lives, we can cultivate a mindset that prioritizes long-term vision while staying adaptable to change and new opportunities!
