How to: Going for the Gold

December 23, 2013

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed a giant influx in all things gold in my images. I am obsessed with gold this season and  took to a few DIY projects to make our first Christmas in our new home a pretty one. When it comes to decor, I am definitely a “less is more” type of gal. I don’t want a ton of knick knacks cluttering our home, I want a few great pieces that we can pull out year and year! (Sorry, but I don’t have a million bins of Christmas decor in our basement.) We pulled out the pieces we wanted to use this year and I felt like we were scrooge. We didn’t have much to decorate our home, however, I was in no mood to spend a fortune on things we would only get to enjoy a few weeks out of the year!

I went to our local Goodwill trying to find a way to pull together our Christmas cheer and make our home feel like it was in the holiday spirit. I started grabbing random ceramic pieces like two cute deer, a Christmas tree, a few pieces from a nativity set, a sad little table and some old bottles. There were a million pieces that would have worked but in honor of simplifying, I picked my favorites. Most cost around $1! I then stopped at the local hardware store (only a mile from our home!) and picked up some gold spray paint and some painters tape! I washed the pieces, let them dry, and then hit the yard with a mission to make everything gold. (Don’t ask my husband about this, he wasn’t thrilled that our yard was a little gold hued!) I sprayed over some cardboard and coated each piece twice. The paint dried pretty quick and was easy to apply! I taped off parts of the bottles that I wanted to spray and applied the gold to make them appear “dip dyed!” I also painted the table white and then painted the ends of the legs gold – this little $2 charmer will be staying put year round, it’s the perfect little plant table!

I absolutely love how everything turned out, our home looks more cohesive and pretty and the best part is this entire project cost around $25 dollars!  Here is a little peek at what we did and how I am using these pieces around our house this holiday season – chances are a few of the lucky ones will stay out long past December! Here are the pieces busy at work in our home, via Instagram.
