HOMES EDITION II: sulo + delores 

“home wasn’t a set house, or a single town on a map. it was wherever the people who loved you were, whenever you were together.”

this edition of homes is so near and dear to my heart, the fond memories i have with my grandparents can’t even begin to be covered in a blog post. the stories they have told and retold so many times always have a way of giving me goosebumps. the way they tease each other, flirt, and still hold hands gets me every time. what an example they have set for us, such a true blessing. their story is on that belongs in a book, a man who fell for a lady the very night they met, at a friends wedding he asked where she wanted to go on their honeymoon. after years in the service, letters exchanged, he showed up at her door step unannounced and ready to propose a lifetime together. even though she had her doubts, they jumped into marriage head first and have never looked back. they have traveled around the world and lived all over the country. sulo is a jokester, he has ridiculously clever one-liners that he loves to share, he writes polkas, and loves to sing too! delores serves, she takes care of anyone and everyone and has a heart of gold. together, they have four children, nine grandchildren, and four great-grandkids!

meet: sulo + delores 

ages: 85 and 77 

location: cromwell, mn

occupations: retired technician for an oil refinery, retired LPN 

how long have you been together: together since august 19, 1950. married for 60 years. 

how did you meet: at a wedding dance for a classmate, they danced to polkas and spent the evening together. that same night sulo asked delores where they should go on their honeymoon. “i thought she was a cute chic,” said sulo. delores was 15 years old, sulo was 21. delores said marriage was the furthest from her mind at the time.

what do you admire most about your partner: 

d:  he is very complimentary, he is also a way better listener now than when we first were married. he is caring, gentle, friendly, and of course nice looking! 

s: she is so sharp. she is pretty from top to bottom, i wanted her by my side, that says a lot right there. she is also a little feisty, it shows that she can stand up for herself, that is special. 

what are you most thankful for in your life: 

d:  faith is very important to me. i am proud of my family, each and every one of them. we have a good home, great friends, and good health. we are very blessed and have learned to appreciate the little things. 

s: good health, family, and faith. now i enjoy my grandkids so much, i was so busy working when my kids were growing up, it is nice to have time to spend with my grandkids. i am thankful for my time, being financially sound, and a warm house. we are healthy, i weigh the same amount i weighed when i graduated high school, now isn’t that something? 

what is something you are looking forward to: 

d: more travels together. each day is a gift, we are very content with our lives. our expectations are all realistic, but we manage to stay busy. we spend time with friends, we are involved at church, and love spending time with our family.  

s: each and every day we have is a gift. we love heading to florida in the winter. family, friends, and fun, we love that. we enjoy nature, being outside together, playing cribbage, cards, and pool. oh, and we still love to polka. 

one piece of advice for couples: 

d: listen, compromise, cooperate, and put god first. don’t sweat the small stuff, enjoy being supportive of your children and grandkids. 

s: eat slow, drink lots of water, lots of fruit and veggies, and stay active. be a good listener, put your ideas together, dine together, and don’t ever skip date night.
