It was our first weekend off together in months, zero plans were on the calendar and nothing had to be done. It was one of those feelings where we weren’t even sure what we would fill our time with, all we knew is that we were so excited to just be. It sounds so standard but when you work opposite schedules as your spouse, those weekends are fleeting and time together seems a bit more limited. The best part of it all? We didn’t have any expectations on what we would do, no big date nights planned or parties to attend. The weekend was ours and we claimed it that way.

As we sat on the couch after eating a meal of fish tacos and sipping some wine, Drew asked if I wanted to watch Netflix. I immediately laughed at the fact that we rarely use our PS3 and then remembered that we had “Rock Band,” something that we just about left on the curb when we moved because of it’s huge box. I begged Drew to run downstairs and grab the guitar so we could plan a little Guitar Hero while we sipped our wine. Now, you may not know this about me, but I was the queen of Guitar Hero back in college. One of Drew’s first memories of me was a time when I went to his dorm to study freshman year, I heard Guitar Hero playing down the hall and went into some random guy’s dorm room and challenged him to a match. He accepted, I then beat his bum on “expert” while Drew looked on. It’s definitely not my proudest moment, but I sure can rock those solos. I still laugh that he still married me all those years later.
You see, our marriage isn’t this crazy glamorous life of date nights out and parties and time together doing adventures, it looks a lot like Saturday nights in making fish tacos, cleaning the clutter, and playing guitar hero. It isn’t pretty Instagram photos of us all dressed up or traveling the world. It’s picking crappy Netflix movies (sorry, babe!) and laughing at how cheesy they are. Illuminating our night by the glow of our Christmas tree that only has two presents underneath it. It’s falling asleep at 8PM and waking up only to climb back into bed and take a nap with the pups. These are the moments I cherish the most because they are so real, they remind us of how much we enjoy one another’s company, they teach us to slow down and enjoy each moment. We laughed, cheered each other on, sipped more wine and basked in the fact that we are together, we are happy and healthy, and we are very much in love. These “lame” weekends are ones I hope we cherish forever and ever, amen.
