In most scenarios, I would consider myself an early adopter. I’m not afraid to try the latest tech or trend and figure out if it has a place in my life and business. That said, one thing that I waited on for a while was CBD. The boom of CBD in pop culture made me pause — what is CBD? How does it impact my health and wellness? Is it safe? Is it a drug? What benefits could it bring to my life? How do I know which brands are using top quality ingredients and not just selling potions with an empty promise?

The founders of Equilibria saw how CBD impacted their own lives and wellness, and they also saw an opportunity to support women while answering the many questions that surrounded the Cannabis-based product. I’m so excited to have Coco Meers and Marcy Capron Vermillion on the podcast to talk about the once-taboo topic of Cannabis and CBD, and why they started a CBD company dedicated to supporting and helping women with their stressors and pain. This is CBD 101 with the founders of Equilibria.

What is CBD?

Coco and Marcy learned early on in their research for developing and founding Equilibria that many women didn’t understand exactly what CBD is or what it could do, on a proven scientific level, for their bodies. Education became a big part of what Equilibria is all about, and they walked me through some key information about CBD.

“CBD at its core is one molecular compound of the cannabis sativa plant. Our products are full spectrum, which means that they have a variety of things. Cannabinoids — CBD, CBC, CBN, et cetera, and a tiny amount of THC,” they explained.

Yes, a tiny amount of THC, the psychoactive element of cannabis. But, she explained, “The legal difference between hemp and what we know as marijuana is that hemp is 0.3% THC or less. All together, they are cannabis. So if you heard someone say cannabis, they could be talking about hemp based CBD. They could be talking about a marijuana or weed product. But it is the same plant, just bred in two different ways.”

What Does CBD Do?

CBD does not get you “high”. Coco and Marcy explained, “What CBD really does in your body is modulating what’s known as the endocannabinoid systems, or otherwise known as the ECS. The ECS is sort of like your master puppeteer system that can affect all the other systems in your body, such as your reproductive system, various parts of your nervous system, and your autonomic nervous system.”

Every mammal is trying to find and maintain homeostasis in the body, but as they explained, “For a lot of women, especially as we mature, as we age, homeostasis is just like this wild rollercoaster ride. And what we’re trying to do here is use cannabinoids to get homeostasis back to this nice baseline where you’re feeling kind of balanced.”

Marcy and Coco continued, “What you’re doing then is you’re actually helping your system. You’re replacing compounds that your body actually makes. We actually make our own cannabinoids. Not a lot of people know that, so they’re not called CBD or CBG or anything, but we make our own. What we do with these ones from a plant is we’re basically replacing our inability to make enough of our own and supplant and regulate that system.”

Women and CBD

Equilibria focuses on women in particular because not only are they passionate about helping women as women themselves, but it also allows them to focus their research and development efforts to develop a product that is beautifully tailored to women and the unique needs of women.

Consider this — CBD helps to replenish the endocannabinoids that our bodies otherwise make themselves but we may not have as much of as we get older. Stress on our body, certain procedures even decrease our naturally occurring endocannabinoids.

Marcy and Coco explained, “Becoming endocannabinoid deficient feels really terrible. If you get a hysterectomy and you’ve lost a ton of your endocannabinoid receptors, it’ll be almost impossible to get back to homeostasis without some sort of help. It’s a big thing that we wish that the research had revealed obviously many years sooner, but I think cannabis is the key to women’s satisfaction and ability to deal with stress in modern life.”

More from Coco and Marcy

The founders of Equilibria covered so much ground in this super fascinating and eye-opening conversation about cannabis, CBD, and the science that backs it all up. Coco and Marcy also shared insight for product based business owners on educating your potential customers so they feel confident enough to purchase, as well as the unique benefits an entrepreneur can experience from a routine and specifically tailored dosage of CBD.
