We’ve all heard the saying: “Start before you’re ready.” But how often do we really take that advice to heart?
Today’s episode is a little different—and really special—because I’m taking you inside Chapter 15 of my book, How Are You, Really?
In this chapter, I dive deep into the fear of starting imperfectly, finding the courage to take that first step toward your dreams, and why taking messy, brave action—despite your doubts—is the secret to growth.
Whether you’re launching a new business, starting a podcast, or pursuing a passion that’s been on your heart, this chapter is all about embracing the imperfection that comes with the journey.
And trust me, I know a thing or two about that. Starting this podcast was anything but perfect, but here we are, over 800 episodes later, proof that action creates clarity.
If you’ve been looking for permission to start—imperfectly and courageously—this episode is for you.

Now, let’s dive into the chapter and start embracing the beauty of imperfection together.
The Illusion of Perfection
When I first started my podcast, I had no idea what I was doing. I recorded my very first episode in the front seat of my 2008 hybrid, parked in my garage, using a basic microphone and two spare bedroom pillows to muffle the sound.
It was far from perfect, but it was a start. Fast forward to today, and I’ve recorded over 800 episodes, proving that action creates clarity.
Perfection is an illusion. It’s a notion that can paralyze us, keeping us from taking the necessary steps to pursue our dreams. I often remind myself of the Voltaire quote, “The best is the enemy of the good.”
This simple phrase cuts to the core of our perfectionist tendencies. When we stall in pursuit of perfection, we miss out on opportunities to try, learn, and grow.
The Power of Imperfect Action
When I hit record for that first podcast episode, I was filled with insecurity. I worried about how I would sound, whether I would forget my thoughts, or if anyone would want to listen. But I realized that sharing my ideas and experiences was enough. That was my imperfect action.
Starting this podcast could have ended in failure, but even then, I wouldn’t have counted it as a loss. Failure, like success, exists only in the ways we define it. We get to decide what counts as success or failure.
Mistakes are not something to fear; they are opportunities for growth. If we choose to embrace our ever-evolving selves, we can turn every experience into an experiment. Instead of labeling everything as a success or failure, we can view our actions as valuable information that empowers us to make better decisions moving forward.
The Importance of Taking Risks
In today’s world, we often want to fast forward through the process of getting better. We’re afraid of being seen trying, worried about judgment, and concerned about not achieving an Instagram-worthy outcome from day one. But every major pivot in life brings us back to square one.
I remember recording that first episode, not thinking about episode 500 or what my podcast would become. I focused on that first step—hitting record and sharing my thoughts.
It was about lowering the stakes and keeping my sights on what I could control in that moment.
Imperfect action is like a workout. You might feel like giving up, but when someone reminds you that you can do anything for just a few more seconds, you find the strength to keep going.
