Dear Jenna: My Instagram Needs Help, BIG TIME!

Dear Jenna, 
I need help, big time. Instagram is just something that no matter how hard I try, I can’t master. I spend hours a day trying to pick an Instagram worthy photo, I stare at that blinking cursor and often resort to captions like, “It’s Friday, here’s a picture of pretty flowers,” I stare at all of the perfect in my feed and feel like this chaotic, imperfect life of mine will never look as good as it should. I feel like everyone else has somehow figured it out and still I am lost. How do you get more followers? How do you know what to post and what to say? Help me, help me, help me.

It’s funny really, but the number one thing I get asked about as a business owner is Instagram. I’ve flown all over the country to speak on the subject and to help others “crack the Instagram code.” There’s just so much to one silly little app that can really get into our heads and mess with us. If we’re being honest, most of us are addicted to Instagram (while also acknowledging that the app itself makes us feel “not enough.”) But don’t worry, I’ve heard your cries loud and clear, your questions have resounded in my mind and heart and I’ve got a few really special things coming up for you to help answer every little question you might have on the app! 

The thing is, I truly (in my heart of hearts) believe that the app isn’t about being popular, it’s about being profitable. Popular doesn’t pay the bills so if we, as business owners, are spending a ton of time curating a feed for our brand, we need to make sure that our efforts are paying off. The biggest mistake I see made? Entrepreneurs using their Instagram accounts in feeble attempts to sell – in fact, the number of straight up sales pitches I see on the app makes me cringe. Instagram should not be your pitch, instead it should be the handshake. What do I mean by that? People need to know you, like you, and trust you before they will ever hire you or buy something from you. If every post is a feeble attempt to sell to them, they will simply move and keep scrolling.
