Did you know that by the start of 2024, 53% of surveyed employees say they’re likely to leave their current company and 77% of surveyed employers struggled to fill open positions?
With that, why wouldn’t we be looking for ways to refine our company cultures to maintain and attract top talent?
This candid conversation with my right hand gal, Marisa, is all about the reality of transparency in business, where it is welcomed, and where it shouldn’t happen.
If you want to keep and maintain the talent that you have on your team, having hard conversations HAS to be something you prioritize…So let’s talk about it!
This episode contains insights on how to foster a culture of openness and authenticity to help attract and maintain top talent in your team and I can’t wait for us to dive in. Let’s go!
The Importance of Building Trust
This probably goes without saying, but by fostering an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, concerns, and aspirations, us as business owners can build trust and strengthen relationships within our teams.
When team members know that their voices are heard and their concerns are taken seriously, it creates a sense of belonging and loyalty.
I truly believe that the trust my team and I have in each other has been an essential piece of maintaining motivated and engaged employees!
Communication Leads to Creative Solutions
One of my favorite benefits of transparent conversations is how they lead to creative solutions within the team. There have been so many times that team members have felt empowered to share their ideas and suggestions, and it sparked innovation!
When fostering a culture of team members speaking up, be sure to encourage them to come to you with new approaches to challenges.
When team members feel valued and respected, they are more likely to stay with the company and contribute positively to its growth. By actively engaging in discussions about career aspirations, work-life balance, and personal goals, we as employers can create a supportive environment that encourages long-term commitment from our team members!
How It Prevents Unexpected Departures
By creating an environment where team members feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and concerns openly, employers can gain valuable insights into their employees’ needs and aspirations.
Open communication can also help in identifying potential issues early on and addressing them before they lead to unexpected departures.
For example, Marisa had an open conversation with me about her desire for a different role ultimately led to a successful transition that benefited both of us… and this role wouldn’t exist if she hadn’t felt comfortable speaking up!
Our Advice to Employees
This conversation was mostly directed at entrepreneurs, but Marisa and I have advice for employees, too… if you are an employee and you feel stuck, present some ideas of how you could add value or how you could use your gifts in a different way.
Even if your employer says, “No thank you,” they’re at least now aware of what’s in your wheelhouse and what you’re thinking about. Therefore, if an exit is your next step, they’re not blindsided!
I genuinely think transparency is everything for both employees and employers. It has allowed us to build an environment where our team feels safe and secure in their positions, but they don’t feel stuck.
I think that that is like the most powerful place to be because you know that there are opportunities for you, that there are places for you to bring your ideas, that if there is a shift in your life that you will be supported in that you’re not going to be left.
I’m really proud of what my team and I have built, and I hope this episode inspires you to lean into the hard conversations, too!
