I know you’re marketing your business on social media… but are you doing it the RIGHT way!?

Apps like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and more are GREAT for building your business… as long as you know how to do it strategically. 

I mean really, Goal Digger… If social media were to go away tomorrow, would you still have a way to connect with your audience, or would your business go away with it?

On April 24, 2024, President Biden signed a bill that gives TikTok nine months to find a new owner or be banned in the United States. There are some concerns around the risk of China’s government forcing the current owner, the Beijing-based company ByteDance, to hand over data on American TikTok users.

TikTok’s CEO has stated that ByteDance is not controlled by the Chinese Communist Party, and that all of its data on American users is stored in cloud servers owned by a US-based software company, Oracle.

It’s all over the news… But what does that mean for creators and entrepreneurs?

Regardless of the outcome, you won’t lose access to TikTok in the US immediately. However, this should be a wake-up call to content creators and business owners that we can’t rely on platforms we don’t own and can’t control. And the future of any social media platform is uncertain!

Now, let’s dive into this conversation on how to sell on social media in a way that serves your audience AND your business.

Hot Take: Social Media Is Meant To Be Social!

I’m only half-joking when I call this a hot take… because how many of us have seen social media as simply a marketing tool for so long, that we forget it was made to be SOCIAL in the first place?!

Earlier this year, I recorded an episode about my 2024 marketing predictions and in it, I guessed that people would go back to the roots of social media. I still stand by this prediction, because we’re already seeing this trend halfway through the year!

Because social media platforms are designed for connection, community building, and authentic engagement. While it may be tempting to focus solely on selling, the true essence of social media lies in fostering relationships and creating meaningful connections with your audience. By prioritizing socialness over sales, we can build genuine relationships, add value, and create a sense of community!

Authenticity and Building Relationships

We all know that authenticity breeds trust, and trust leads to sales… so why is it hard for us to show the real life in our content?!

It is so important to be genuine in your interactions, share your story authentically, and connect with your audience on a human level. Building real relationships will yield FAR greater results than a transactional approach!

What Your Main Marketing Goal Should Be

Serving an email list is the number one way to algorithm-proof your business and be certain that, no matter what happens on a social media platform, you have a DIRECT line of communication to your audience and the people who will buy from you.

I pour almost all of my time and effort into my email list these days, because I know that no matter what happens on social media, I’ll still be able to show up in people’s inboxes (without fighting any sort of algorithm) at the EXACT moment I want them to hear from me!

The bottom line is that selling on social the RIGHT way is by getting them OFF the platform. So, let’s chat about creative ways to use social media as a ‘handshake’ and how to shift your mindset from casual browsing to purposeful engagement and sales conversion. 

The Power of Storytelling and Webinars

Storytelling is a powerful tool for engaging your audience and conveying your message effectively, because truth be told, it is VERY difficult to share your story in <60 second time limits.

My recommendation utilize social media is to START to share your personal stories, experiences, and insights, and then invite them to connect with you deeper on your email list. 

Through storytelling, you can invite your audience to join you on a journey, making them feel like they are part of something special, especially if that ‘something’ is an upcoming live class or webinar.

Webinars provide a fantastic platform for demonstrating your expertise and nurturing leads through valuable content. Remember, it’s not just about selling; it’s about providing value and building trust!

Leveraging Data and Analytics

I’m sure it won’t surprise you that data and analytics play a crucial role in understanding the performance of your content and marketing efforts. By conducting regular audits and tracking key metrics, you can gain valuable insights into what your audience wants to see from you.

But do you want to know the REAL way to use analytics to inform your marketing strategy?! Pay attention to what’s working AND what’s actually getting you real results, because often they AREN’T the same thing…

Building Confidence in Social Selling

Selling on social media requires confidence, authenticity, and consistency. By approaching social selling as a way to serve and add value, rather than just pushing products or services, you can build trust with your audience and drive meaningful engagement. 

Remember to speak to your audience as if you are talking to a friend, share recommendations passionately, and focus on building relationships rather than making sales.

However, I will say that this is why I love selling more on things like webinars or to my email list… it’s so much easier to be confident when you know people are there because they CHOOSE to be! They are already curious, they’ve already raised their hand to hear from you.

Moral of the Story: Grow Your Email List!

Success in getting people OFF social media and onto your email list takes time and persistence, but the rewards are worth it!
