Dear Jenna: I’m a Photographer and I Suck at Lighting

Dear Jenna,

I am a photographer and I suck at lighting – there, I said it. I know that a lot of people claim to be “natural light photographers” and while I love that terminology and the idea behind it, something makes me feel like I need to just suck it up and figure out how to use lighting in my photography. Not every shoot or wedding will have brilliant light and I have nightmares that I will be stuck in a situation like this and not be able to create images up to the rest of my quality.

HELP!

Hi, there! First off, can I just welcome you into the club of photographers who didn’t magically know how to light things? I promise you’re in good company and I also promise to help. I’m going to flat out tell you that I’m not the most technical lighter when it comes to using flash but I will also tell you that I am no longer terrified of it.

Let’s first talk about the whole term “natural light photographer” because I think a lot of us connect with that. When it comes to wedding days, I will shoot without any extra lighting for as long as I possibly can. Why? Because that’s my photography style and I know how to leverage my camera and lenses to allow for that 95% of the time. BUT I also am not afraid to grab a few light stands, a transmitter, a receiver, and throw up a few off camera flashes if you have a dark venue with no where to bounce light from. (Sound scary? It’s not!)

A few years ago, just the term OCF sounded like a foreign language to me, almost like an exclusive club that I wasn’t invited into (it means Off Camera Flash in case you’re still feeling that way!) and it doesn’t need to be as scary or expensive as you might think it is. When you learn how to leverage light (whether real or artificial) you don’t have to walk into scenarios stressed or frazzled, it gives you utter confidence to create images that you are proud of – no matter the setting or sun.

So here’s what I am going to tell, you, I am teaming up and sharing something that I KNOW will change up your flash game, why? Because my dear friends Justin and Mary are some of the best instructors in the biz and I’ve watched them speak and teach on countless occasions, only to walk away with a little bounce in my step because I always learn something new and light.

Join them for their free training on “Lighting on the Fly – How to Rock Your Flash” and let them walk you through how to light your way to incredible images – using equipment you likely already own (how great is that?) For tuning in, you’ll get their free lighting diagrams (seriously, that is a GIFT!) You better believe I’ll be tuning in and I hope to be in the crowd with you, basking in this amazing education!
