Meet Lizzie: From Etsy Seller to Podcast Host

I loved speaking with my student Lizzie Smiley, who shared her inspiring journey from running a successful Etsy shop to launching her podcast, How to Sell Your Stuff on Etsy.

Lizzie had been listening to my podcast for years while managing her Etsy business and raising her children. When she decided to pivot and start a podcast, she followed the steps outlined in The Podcast Lab, and within just a few months, her show took off!

Lizzie’s podcast quickly gained traction, reaching over 620,000 downloads. She emphasized the importance of consistency, committing to a schedule that worked for her. Initially, she started with bi-weekly episodes, but as her audience grew, she transitioned to weekly episodes.

Lizzie also shared how she wasn’t afraid to repurpose content, using reruns during busy times, which allowed her to maintain her schedule without sacrificing quality.

The Ripple Effect of Podcasting

One of the most profound insights Lizzie shared was the ripple effect of her podcast. She realized that her show wasn’t just impacting her listeners; it was changing lives.

Many of her audience members are moms who want to be home with their children or individuals facing challenging circumstances. By providing valuable content for free, Lizzie is helping her listeners improve their livelihoods, which in turn affects their families and communities.

Lizzie also opened up about her struggles with imposter syndrome. She initially doubted her expertise and worried that she wasn’t “cool enough” to host a podcast. However, she quickly learned that her authenticity and willingness to share her knowledge resonated with her audience.

This is a common hurdle for many aspiring podcasters, but Lizzie’s story is a testament to the fact that you don’t have to be perfect; you just have to be real!

Tara’s Journey: Empowering Parents of Autistic Children

Next, we welcomed Tara Phillips, a speech-language pathologist who started her podcast to provide training and resources for parents and educators working with young autistic children.

Tara had no prior experience with podcasting, but she was determined to reach more people with her message. After going through The Podcast Lab, she launched her show in January 2023, The Autism Little Learners Podcast, and the response has been incredible!

Tara shared how her podcast has allowed her to leave the classroom and focus on her business full-time. She emphasized the importance of connecting with her audience and building a community around her podcast.

The feedback she receives from listeners has been overwhelmingly positive, and she’s proud to provide valuable resources to families and educators around the world!

One of the most touching moments in Tara’s story was when she shared how her podcast has strengthened her relationship with her father. He listens to her episodes every week, and it has opened up new lines of communication between them!

Shannon’s Transformation: From Blogger to Podcaster

Finally, I chatted with my student Shannon Arner, who transitioned from blogging to podcasting.

After experiencing burnout from running a business in the pet industry, she and her husband made a significant lifestyle change and moved to a tiny cottage on the coast of North Carolina. They started a blog to document their journey, and eventually, the idea of a podcast emerged.

Shannon faced her own fears about starting a podcast, feeling intimidated by the thought of speaking into a microphone. However, she quickly discovered that podcasting became a therapeutic outlet for her when she launched her show, The Arner Adventures.

She found joy in sharing her story and connecting with her audience on a deeper level. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and she’s proud of the consistency she’s maintained with her show.
