We had planned our “Destination Kohler” trips months ago, shortly after I had found out I was pregnant. I remember picking out our activities, spa services, and schedule with a growing bump in mind – smiling thinking of our “staycation” and how nice it would be to rest and relax together. Little did I know how much we would need it just one month after we miscarried.
I don’t even know where to begin beyond the fact that at least thirty times throughout our time in Kohler, we said, “We have to come back here.” I’m going to break down a few of our favorite things that we did/saw/ate so that when you plan your own little Wisconsin “staycation” you know exactly what to do!
Most Relaxing Part:
The Kohler Waters Spa: Trust me, I love a simple, good spa day. I never, in a million years, would think of myself in that way, but do I ever appreciate a nice spa experience. The spa itself was beautiful, every corner relaxing, inviting, and warm. I got the “Healing Waters Treatment,” which was a really neat twist on a water massage and Drew got the “Woodsman Massage.” We both left feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Trust me: I could have hung out there in my robe allllllll day.
Close Second: Our room at The American Club had an AMAZING deep, jetted tub and while I love a good bath, nothing has ever compared to that beautiful tub. I turned up the water, threw in some bubble bath and soaked away. It was as delightful as it sounds.
Most Adventurous Part:
We took a kayaking trip that ended up being one of my favorite parts of the trip. They drive you up stream and drop you off; the entire trip down the Sheboygan River is about 2.5 hours. It was relaxing, leisurely, beautiful, with a few little rapids areas mixed in (to make sure you’re awake!) We had so much fun floating down the river, seeing the golf courses, and being together on an adventure.
Close second: Clay shooting! I had never shot a gun in my life but Drew really wanted to shoot some clays and I surprisingly had a blast. They taught me how to do it, gave me tips, and I hit a handful of clays on my own! SCORE!
Best Food I Ate:
I went back and forth a few times on this one because all of the food we at was so good (seriously, incredible.) My favorite thing out of the whole weekend was the lobster bisque from The Immigrant Restaurant. It was amazing. I had a five-course meal just so I could step out of my comfort zone and try some things I knew I would never order and the entire experience was so much fun.
Close second: Our meal at Whistling Straits was insanely good. I had seared scallops and they were incredible. Our views of the course as the sunset were breathtaking and the service was top notch! Loved dining there!
Must do:
If you’re heading to Kohler, you MUST golf Whistling Straits. Now me? I’m not a golfer, but when I told Drew we were heading to Kohler he asked right away about the course and if he could play. We met so many people who had travelled all across the country just to golf in Kohler, so it’s no wonder these courses are world renowned.
Drew golfed a full 18 and I walked along side the entire time (which I definitely didn’t plan to do) but it was so insanely gorgeous that I wanted to see what the next hole looked like. Our caddies were amazing, the group we were paired with was a blast, and Drew had a once-in-a-lifetime golfing experience that I was able to watch. It was seriously incredible.
Most Impressed by:
The service – everywhere. We were blown away by the kindness, the eagerness to help, the ease of service, everything. Every single person we encountered seemed genuinely happy, knowledgeable, and just overall fun! We had incredible servers, awesome valets, friendly concierges, knowledgeable teachers, you name it, they did it. Three days into our trip and we were still greeted by name when we walked into the building! Talk about impressive.
Everything felt so cared about, every detail was taken care of. We have never had our hotel room tidied like it was there (Drew LOVED it, then wanted to apply for a job!) and every corner just exceeded our expectations.
We had an incredible time in Kohler and keep talking about how we want to make a trip to The American Club an annual occurrence. It was refreshing, so beautiful, and being so close to home, it’s the perfect little getaway!

The golf course views right on the water remind me of the golf course on the Marine Corps base on Oahu, Hawaii. My husband was stationed there and I lived there with him for a beautiful 9 month stretch. Neither of us golf so we never really got to experience it too much, but I drove past it and the view… WOW. This took me back to those Pacific ocean views, and I too would have gladly walked along just to see them! Glad you guys had a wonderful vacation. Continuing to pray for you!
