It’s one of the hardest parts of social media: what the heck do I post? What do I say about it? And what does my audience care about? I see it all the time: business owners hiding behind their work because they don’t feel like they are interesting or compelling enough to captivate an audience. While this approach may seem to work for awhile, it doesn’t provide the longevity that building an actual brand does. Think of the service or product you are offering today: can you confidently tell me that five years from now you’ll be offering that same product or service? If the answer isn’t a booming “YES” then it’s time to change up your strategy to focus on building a brand that people love.
1.) You need to be in your feed:
I say this all the time but can I find YOU in your feed? Could I see your face without scrolling for days? Would I know it was you without having to click on the caption? If the answer is no, then we’ve got to make a shift. I want your feed to be speckled with images and stories of you so that I fall in love with YOU, the creator. If I love YOU, chances are that I will love anything you touch or make. This is how trust is built (this is also why I get asked things like: what color of nail polish is that, where did you get your pillow, what kind of flatware is that?) People know me, they trust me, they like what I like.
2.) Your feed must be more than just your work:
Why do sit on their phone and scroll? Because they are looking for connection. Your feed needs to create connection and it doesn’t just have to be through your work. Take it from a girl who built a brand around yoga pants, puppies, wine, naps, and mac and cheese… these things aren’t a part of my business, but they connect me to likeminded people who love the same things. When you share other facets of your life, people connect to you and they start to like you. Posts shouldn’t be focused on selling, they should focus on connection. Think of the things that you might have in common with your ideal client and share them!
3.) Create a strategy and stick to it:
It’s easy to stare at the screen and have no clue where to start. When you create a strategy and a posting schedule, it takes the guesswork out of hitting “publish!” Commit to posting once per day, Monday – Friday and sit down to plan out each post (from the photo to the caption, even the hashtags.) When you go into the week with a plan, it doesn’t feel so daunting when you open the app and plan to post. I have a structure so that I know what to post and when each day of the week!
Still feeling stuck? Not sure how to create a flow in your feed? I’ve got you covered!

Dear Jenna,
You’ve really struck a chord in my heart with how generous you have been with your ideas, thoughts, and business organization. I’ve listened to each podcast about 5 times each just trying to digest as much material into my brain as possible! When I went into this business a long time ago, photographers weren’t as generous or giving, something I felt was a huge turn off. I just wanted to take a minute to thank you from the bottom of my heart… from an EXTRA small business owner like me… for giving me tools and ideas that could help me “think out of the box” and take myself beyond what I thought my limitations are in efforts to succeed in what I do. It’s like you’re blind mentoring me!! You know, cause you can’t see me! 🙂
Thanks again for your kindness.

Jenna, you’re awesome! Thank you so much! I always seem to get a case of “writers block” when it comes to posting on social media.
Yes! I hate when I find a new IG account that others have told me they are inspired by but then as I scroll I don’t see ANY personal images. I want to see their faces and them doing life. A balance is totally needed! I would love to know more about creating a strategy for posting to IG though. I am horrible at that!! We just created an IG for our blog in addition to us having our personal accounts as well. Finding the balance with that and what to cross post has been difficult.
Thank you so much for your honesty in this post. You are filled with inspiration and I enjoy your Instagram Feed tremendously, as well as your husbands.
